Theoretical and Experimental Study of Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Photonic Crystal Fibers
2018
Experimental observation of polarization modulation instability in all-normal dispersion photonic crystal fibers is reported. Stokes and anti-Stokes sidebands with spectral shift of 40 nm were observed when the fiber was pumped at 1064 nm. Experimental results are baked by a vectorial four-wave mixing model.
A Leibniz variety with almost polynomial growth
2005
Abstract Let F be a field of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the variety of Leibniz algebras V ˜ 1 defined by the identity y 1 ( y 2 y 3 ) ( y 4 y 5 ) ≡ 0 . We give a complete description of the space of multilinear identities in the language of Young diagrams through the representation theory of the symmetric group. As an outcome we show that the variety V ˜ 1 has almost polynomial growth, i.e., the sequence of codimensions of V ˜ 1 cannot be bounded by any polynomial function but any proper subvariety of V ˜ 1 as polynomial growth.
Reconsidering passivity and activity in children’s digital play
2016
The discussion around children’s digital game culture has resulted in two contradictory images of children: the passive, antisocial children uncritically and mechanically consuming digital game content and the active, social children creatively using and interacting with digital game content. Our aim is to examine how these seemingly contradictory ideas of “active” and “passive” children could be considered. By means of empirical examples of children playing digital dress-up and makeover games, we will point out that for the successful use of these concepts, they need to be thoroughly contextualized. By discussing the context and referent of activity and passivity, it is possible to overcom…
Highly Sensitive Polarization Rotation Measurement through a High‐Order Vector Beam Generated by a Metasurface
2020
The precise determination of the polarization state of light is fundamental for a vast variety of applications in remote sensing, astronomy, optics and terahertz technology, to name just a few. Typically, polarization characterization is performed by using a combination of multiple optical devices such as beam splitters, polarizers, and waveplates. Moreover, to achieve high-precision, balanced photodetectors and lock-in amplifiers are employed, thus contributing to increasing system complexity. Here, a technique for polarization rotation measurements with a dynamic range of 180° and a sensitivity of about 10−2 degrees is realized using a properly designed metasurface. Such device generates …
Abating inequalities? : Job quality at the intersection of class and gender in Finland 1977–2013
2016
Globalization with its many side-effects on working life is seen to pose accentuated risks especially for women and low skilled workers – resulting in increasing polarization of job quality. In contrast to “universal theories”, institutional theories claim changes in work life might vary according to the institutional and cultural frameworks which mediate the global pressures of change. This study analyses job quality trends in Finland at the intersection of class and gender. The results, based on the Finnish Quality of Work Life survey (1977–2013), find no clear evidence of polarization. In line with the institutional theory’s prediction of a low risk of polarization in coordinated and in…
